Grid Modernization : The grid edge

Grid modernization is the latest trend within electric utilities. Across the industry, the focus of this collective effort is on improving grid reliability, resiliency and security.

Ironically, these same goals have been pursued through the past decade. It’s just that now there’s a current moniker everyone can rally behind. “Wherever a utility is in their journey to improve the grid, they’re doing something for grid modernization,” says Jared Gregory, product marketing manager—electric solutions for Sensus. “Every action they take is advancing them forward, whether it’s embracing AMR or moving to AMI.

And this should be encouraging to all stakeholders.” The biggest shift for this emerging trend is the connectedness of all the pieces and parts. Historically, the different components (devices, applications, etc.) were disassociated, as were their respective benefits and potential. Now, with grid modernization, every aspect of the grid is being viewed with a fresh interdependence, a synergy of impact.
